Avery Peterson Transferring to UMD

Former Grand Rapids Star Left Nebraska Omaha Last Semester

Former Minnesota Mr. Hockey Avery Peterson will enroll at the University of Minnesota Duluth and join the Bulldog hockey program when the spring semester starts.

The transfer was confirmed to FOX 21 Sports Tuesday evening in a text message from Peterson.  There has been no official announcement from UMD.

Sources with knowledge of the situation in both Grand Rapids and Duluth say the former Thunderhawk star was also considering Bemidji State.

Peterson can practice with the Bulldogs once he’s enrolled in school, but will not be eligible to play until January of 2017.  He is also applying for a hardship waiver to get his sophomore year of eligibility back from the NCAA.

A 6th round pick by the Wild in 2013, Peterson left the University of Nebraska Omaha late last semester for personal reasons.  He was looking for a school closer to home.  His older brother Evan suffers from the rare illness metachromatic leukodystrophy.
