New Police Chief hired at UMD

The University of Minnesota-Duluth has hired a new police chief.

Sean Huls officially took over the reigns as top cop on December 28.

Huls is a 16-year veteran of the UMD Police force.

He has served twice as the interim Chief, once from 2011-2012 after Lt. Anne Peterson retired and again in 2015 following the retirement of Capt. Scott Drewlo.

“Sean’s interim performances, his successful career as an officer in UMD Police, and the incredible support for his hire, voiced by members of both the University and the UMD community, made clear that this was a very strong hire for our campus. I look forward to continuing my work with Sean in this capacity,” said Steve Keto, vice chancellor of Finance and Operations at UMD.

A search to fill Hul’s vacant lieutenant position will begin later this month.
