Causeway Construction on Highway 53 Relocation Project Nearly Complete

Work on a raised road across the Rouchleau Pit is expected to be done in two weeks

The road will provide access to construction workers as they build a bridge over the pit, which is a key component in the highway relocation project.

Crews are also nearing completion of the underground foundations for the bridge’s west piers.

Excavation work is continuing on the east side of the pit, which includes some rock blasting to make room for pier work that will begin in the next several weeks.

Kiewit Infrastructure Company took on the construction project.

The work includes relocating nearly 3 miles of Highway 53 in Virginia, construction of a 1,100 foot long bridge spanning the mine pit, realignment of the roadway and a new interchange at Highway 53 and Highway 135.
