Philadelphia Police Officer Ambushed in Squad Car

A Philadelphia Police Officer was shot three times while sitting in his squad car early Friday morning.

Officer Jessie Hartnett underwent surgery after being ambushed in his police car.   He is said to be in stable condition at a local hospital.

The suspect fired a total of 13 shots that hit the officer and his car.

Hartnett returned fire, hitting the suspect at least three times.

Authorities say the suspect in the shooting told investigators that he shot the officer in the name of Islam and pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group.

They also say the man used a stolen police gun in the crime.   The gun was reported stolen from an officer’s home in October of 2013.  It’s unknown at this point how many hands it passed through before being used in Friday’s shooting.

Police say the shooting was unprovoked.

There is no word on the suspect’s condition.
