Duluth-Superior Shipping Season Winding Down

Seven ships will lay-up in the Duluth-Superior port this winter, as the shipping season comes to an end.

The Duluth Seaway Port Authority says the Indiana Harbor laid up early, on November 3.

A major repowering project is also underway at Fraser Shipyards on the Herbert C. Jackson, in dry dock since early December.

The Soo Locks are set to close at midnight on January 15.

Four ships are expected to arrive in the Twin Ports between now and then.  Those include the Edwin H Gott, the American Century, the Kaye. E Barker and the Philip R. Clarke.

The last laker, the Paul. R Tregurtha, is anticipated to arrive next week, marking the official end of the shipping season.

The 2016 shipping season will get underway on March 25 when the Soo Locks reopen.
