Erik Simonson Won’t Seek Duluth Fire Chief Position
State Representative Erik Simonson announced Wednesday that he will not seek the position of Duluth’s next Fire Chief.
Simonson says the reason behind not applying is so he can focus on his campaign for the Minnesota Senate District 7 seat currently held by Senator Roger Reinert. Reinert officially announced he will not seek reelection this year.
According to Simonson, the decision to not apply didn’t come easy.
“It is and it isn’t. I’m at the tail end of my career in the city and looking forward to my next adventure in the legislature. It makes sense, it’s a challenge, but the right decision,” said Simonson.
Simonson informed Mayor Emily Larson of his decision on Wednesday.
Simonson is a 26-year veteran of the Duluth Fire Department, currently serving as Interim Chief.
The search for the next Fire Chief will begin on February 1st. Simonson encourages anyone qualified and interested to apply for the position.
