Woman Identified in Midway Township Officer-Involved Shooting

Authorities have released the name of the Cloquet woman shot by police following a standoff in Midway Township on Thursday night.

Police say 48-year-old Kristen Johnson remains hospitalized at Essentia Health-St Mary’s medical Center in Duluth.

The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Augustana Church around 11:00 p.m. on February 11 on reports of a female threatening to commit suicide by firearm.

When authorities arrived at the church, the woman, now identified as Johnson, got out of her car and allegedly pointed the gun at police multiple times.

That’s when two officers opened fire, striking the woman twice.

The officers, one from the Hermantown Police Department and the other a Minnesota State Trooper, have both been placed on paid administrative leave.  Their identities are expected to be released on Wednesday.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehensions is investigating the shooting at the request of the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office.

Meanwhile, the Sheriff’s Office is investigating Johnson’s actions at the scene.

Once the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the St. Louis County Attorney’s Office for review.
