HS Hockey: Hawks Ready for 7A Championship Game

Hermantown Faces Hibbing-Chisholm for 7th Straight Trip to State

Hermantown moved back in to Section 7A for hockey in 2014.  The Hawks will play in their third straight 7A championship game Wednesday, seeking their third straight title and seventh straight trip to the MSHSL Boys State Hockey Tournament.

The last two years, the Hawks faced the Marshall School in the section final, but the Hilltoppers moved up to Class AA this season, leaving Hibbing/Chisholm as the only thing standing between the Class A state runners-up the last six years and seventh crack at the school’s first title since 2007.
Hermantown is rolling at the right time too.  Since falling behind Eveleth-Gilbert 2–0 in the playoff opener, Bruce Plante’s team has scored 21 goals in a row over about five and a half periods.  Not to mention a 7–0 win over the Bluejackets just two weeks ago.  Despite the one-sided result, many, including Hawks’ senior Wyatt Aamodt expect a closer contest this time around.

“It wasn’t a 7–0 game, any hockey guy knows that for sure,” said Aamodt.  “They’ve got some good players and they work hard, should be a fun one.  I can tell you now it won’t be 7–0, we’ll see what happens.”
“I don’t think our boys will be over confident at all, they know they’re a good team,” said Plante.  “That game got away from them, we know they’re a good club.  We’re going to have to play our best and we know it.”

Face-off in the 7A championship game is set for 7:00 p.m. at AMSOIL Arena.
