DNR to announce Decision on Polymet Environmental Review

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is getting ready to announce whether it will approve the final environmental review for what would be Minnesota’s first copper-nickel mine.

The announcement is set for 1 p.m. Thursday.

DNR Commissioner Tom Landwehr has to certify whether the 3,500-page environmental impact statement for the Polymet mine is “adequate,” meaning it meets the legal requirements.  Landwehr had previously said he was likely to do so unless last minute concerns arose.

Approval would mean PolyMet Mining Corp. can start applying for the permits it needs to build the mine near Babbitt and processing operations near Hoyt Lakes.

Environmental groups plan to keep fighting the project during the permitting process.

PolyMet supporters tout the hundreds of jobs the mine would bring to the struggling Iron Range.
