Fire Marshal: Gloria Dei Church Fire Accidental

A fire at the Gloria Dei Church in Duluth was ruled accidental by the Duluth Fire Marshal’s Office.

The fire was caused by electrical wiring.

Authorities say the fire started in the void space above the plaster ceiling and burned undetected for hours, before smoke reached a smoke detector on the drop ceiling below.

The fire caused $900,000 in damages to the historic church.

A total of 36 firefighters responded to the blaze on the morning of February 18.

Fire crews remained on scene for seven hours.

The building has been determined unsafe for entry.
