Northland Native Does Iditarod
Nathan Schroeder Is The Current Beargrease Champ
Nathan Schroeder believes good things happen in threes, the reigning Beargrease Champ is competing in his third Iditarod Race this week.
“Every March for the last three marches we’ve been coming up here to the Anchorage Wasilla area, and it’s kind of like home,” Schroeder said.
Alaska’s iditarod maybe familiar turf for Nathan but his boyhood pride for Minnesota and the rugged Northland terrain . Nathan started mushing in Minnesota at the age of 12, with assistance from his father.
With tedious hours of training and a good team of canines on the sled, Nathan went to compete and win the race in his own backyard. This year marked his fourth Beargrease win.
Beargrease Director Jason Rice anticipates good results from Alaska.” We are super proud of Nathan for he’s done up there,”Rice said.
Rice told us what could be in the works if Nathan brought home a victory, “I think if he’d win we’d have to have a sled dog parade in honor,” Rice said.
