2016 Legislative Session Kicks off in St. Paul

Elected officials gathered in the Capital building in St. Paul for the start of 2016 Legislative Session.

The building is currently in the midst of massive renovations.

One of the main issues on the legislature’s agenda is a proposal to extend unemployment benefits for laid-off steelworkers.

Many workers on the Iron Range have been out of work for months.

A push by the Republican’s to include the lowering of unemployment taxes for businesses in the legislation is causing a vote to be held up.

A decision was not reached Tuesday, but legislators will continue trying to reach a compromise on this bill.

Other big topics are Sunday liquor sales and figuring out how to spend an expected $900 million state budget surplus.
