Grand Rapids Excited to Return to Girls State
Thunderhawks Won First Sec. 7AAA Title Since 2011
Girls hoops may be last, when you talk about Minnesota’s State tournaments, but in Grand Rapids, it’s anything but least.
Play in the Class AAA State Tournament starts Thursday. Sec. 7AAA champ Grand Rapids takes on AAA #2 seed Winona at 10:00 am.
The Thunderhawks haven’t been to State since 2011, but this will also be the first trip under head coach Kris Hamling.
Hamling had guided the Thunderhawks to the section final in each of her first three seasons on the Rapids bench, but hadn’t been able to win until this year.
“This year we knew what we had to do to fix what we had done in previous years,” said Hamling. “It was mainly defense, so we overcame that and it worked for us.”
Rapids players can’t believe they are headed to Minneapolis.
“This year was crazy, because we were together,” said senior Hannah Morris. “It was so different, we all came in knowing we got this.”
