UPDATE: Victim Identified in Ashland Boating Accident

Authorities have released the name of a man who died in an apparent canoeing accident in Ashland on Sunday.

The Ashland County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as 50-year-old Larry Bettenhausen, of Ashland.

Authorities responded to the XCel Energy Hot Pond around 7 a.m. on reports of a partially submerged boat.

Rescue crews broke through ice to reach the boat, which was 125 yards off-shore.

It’s there that located Bettenhausen’s body.  Bettenhausen was loaded onto the fire department’s “ice angel” rescue craft and brought to shore, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities don’t know how long the man had been in the water.   They say he was wearing a life jacket.

The accident remains under investigation.
