Deadly Explosion Rocks Brussels Airport, Subway

Belgian officials say 31 people are dead and another 187 wounded after three explosions in Brussels.

The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Two explosions rocked the Brussels airport. Another explosion hit a city subway station.

A Belgian TV station is reporting that at least one of the bombs at the Brussels Airport contained nails.

The Gasthuisberg Hospital in Leuven is treating 11 people with serious injuries, three of them critical.  Officials say those wounded have fractures and deep cuts caused by flying glass and nails.

The Brussels airport has been closed for the day.

Intelligence officials say at least one suitcase bomb was detonated at the airport Tuesday morning.

There is also concrete evidence of one suicide bombing at the airport as well.

U.S. intelligence agencies had been on alert for possible attacks since Friday’s arrest in Belgium of accused Paris attacks conspirator Salah Abdeslam.  Officials say it is unclear if Tuesday’s bombings were already planned or set in motion by his or another existing network, or if they were a direct response to Abdeslam’s arrest.

The explosives seen in Brussels on Tuesday appear to be sophisticated, according to officials.
