Cloquet Breaks Ground on New Middle School

Project includes new swimming pool, classrooms, and gym

Residents have called it a long time coming, now they can see progress towards a brand new middle school in Cloquet.

The new middle school will be the home for grades fifth through eighth. It will feature an eight lane swimming pool, classrooms, and a gym.

Even though it was a little breezy for the festivities, many in attendance called the day wonderful for the community.

Construction has already begun as trees have been cut and top soil has been stripped away.

“We’ve been looking forward to this for about three years in planning and when our kids walk through that door, there will be state of the art everything. We’ve got a great bunch of kids and this will give them every opportunity to have a wonderful education ,” said Cloquet school superintendent┬áKen Scarbrough.

Total cost for the project is around 39 million dollars and it’s set to be complete in the fall of 2017.

“It’s good to see the excitement in the community here for this school. Obviously the tax payers have a big investment in this and it’s good to see the community really support it and get a beautiful school here,” said senior project manager Patrick Gallagher.

Funding for the new school comes through a referendum that was passed in 2015. The project will utilize the talents of many local workers.

The new middle school is being built just south of the high school and they hope to put up a webcam soon, so everyone can watch the progress being done.
