Vandals Strike a Cloquet Cemetery

Hillcrest Cemetery was vandalized sometime late last month.

Approximately 25 gravestones were disturbed around April 20 at Hillcrest Cemetery in Cloquet.

Due to the age and size of the gravestones, the damage could be over 100,000 dollars.

Many of the gravestones date back to the early 1900s making it hard to reach their family.

The current plan is to bring cranes in to fix the damage done to many of the gravestones but until the ground dries out, the gravestones will remain on the ground.

Unfortunately vandalism like this isn’t uncommon in the area.

“In 2008 we had a similar damage done at one of our other cemeteries and just a few years ago we had damage at the Hillcrest Cemetery again,” said Cloquet Police Commander, Derek Randall.

The Cloquet Cemetery Association is offering a 500 dollar reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

The Cloquet Police Department wants to remind people that this is not a victimless crime.

“This is a loved one, just use some common sense. Have some dignity and keep that in mind,” said Randall.

The police said they received a new piece of information about the case Monday but because it is an ongoing investigation they are not able to share it.
