Woman Rescued from Fiery Crash on I-35 near Sandstone

A 67-year-old Thunder Bay woman is lucky to be alive after her car went off the road Sunday, hit some trees and burst into flames near Sandstone.

Police say Marie Francoise Hupalo, of Thunder Bay, Ontario, was traveling southbound on Interstate 35 in Pine County, when she veered off the road and hit some trees.

Due to her injuries, Hupalo was unable to get out of the car on her own.  Several people stopped to help and pulled the woman from the car as it began to burn and eventually became engulfed in flames.

Three good samaritans are being credited for rescuing the woman. The State Patrol says Elissa and John Schnell, and Sean Kehren removed the woman from the burning SUV.

The State Patrol says the three played a vital role in saving Hupalo’s life.

The Hupalo family wants thank everyone who was involved in the rescue.
