Victims in BWCA Storm Death Identified

Boy Scout troop mourns the death of peer and volunteer

During last Thursday’s devastating storm, two lives were lost in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The survivors of the Texas Boy Scout troop’s trip are grieving the loss of a 13-year-old peer and a 39-year-old female volunteer.

The group from Troop 121 in Carrollton, Texas, were camped out on the Ontario side of Basswood Lake in the Quetico Provincial Park when strong winds rocked their camp early Thursday. These strong winds caused falling trees which killed two campers.

Authorities have identified them as 13-year-old, Christian Sanches of Lewisville, TX and 39-year-old Rorth Lac of Carrollton, TX.

Scouting spokeswoman, Effie Delimarkos says the survivors were taken back to their base-camp near Ely. Travel arrangements are scheduled for Friday.
