Investments to Benefit Wisconsin’s Airport System

Combining federal, state, and local resources to help fund over 98 public use airports

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s (WisDOT) Airport Improvement Program combines federal, state, and local resources to help fund improvements to over 98 public use airports throughout Wisconsin that are primarily owned by counties, cities, towns, and villages.

Improvements are to include; runway construction and reconstruction; land acquisition; and navigational aids and lighting.

Wisconsin’s airport system works to enhance the economic vitality of Wisconsin communities. This is done so through playing a key role in Wisconsin’s transportation network, meeting business, passenger, freight, and recreational air transportation needs.

In 2015, more than $66 million in federal and state funds was used to support 57 airport projects at 44 airports around the state.

Pavement is an incredibly important feature of any airport and WisDOT reports the conditions of airport pavement through the department’s MAPSS Performance Improvement program, and as of January of this year, 87% of airport pavement was reported in the condition of fair or above.
