Police Shooting in South Carolina Leaves Suspect Dead

Virginia man wanted for murder was shot and killed after shooting at police

At approximately 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday August 2, authorities located a man wanted for murder, after he stole his victim’s car.

22-year-old Richard London violently murdered 80-year-old Melvin Powell on Sunday July 31 in Danville, Virginia. Police sent out a release to the Associated Press stating that London stole Powell’s car after the killing.

Officers located the vehicle in Lake City, SC, just 65 miles east of Columbia and attempted to pull over London. London opened fire on the officers, on one of the busiest highways, US Highway 52. Officers shot London, who died from his injuries early Tuesday morning.

The names of the officers have not been released, but the State Law Enforcement Division says the man shot was white, one officer was black, and the other Hispanic.

Police have not given a motive or said how Powell was killed.
