Big Business Expected to Follow Tall Ships

Local businesses prepare for crowds.

The Tall Ships are on their way.

“We’re eager for the ships to arrive and their crews in addition to all the people coming that are enthusiastically here in Duluth participating in the event,” said Visit Duluth’s Bob Gustafson.

In less than a week the Tall Ships will arrive and historically that’s meant pretty big business in Duluth.

“We’re expecting this to be the busiest week of the year for us, so we’re just preparing extra of everything,” said Dylan Westerlund, general manager of Fitgers.

There will be seven ships coming to Duluth and with them almost 300,000 people.

“It is a huge event for the city of Duluth and its going to have long lasting impact for us,” said Gustafson.

It will also be impacting local businesses whose summer business is coming to a close.

“It’s really great for us, especially this time of year. It’s really our last hurrah for the summer,” said Westerlund.

With crews and large crowds expected to dock Thursday through Sunday in Duluth and an estimated 15 million dollars expected to come in with them this event is like no other for businesses.

“It’s really busier all week for us because the event last longer it’s Thursday, Friday Saturday, Sunday.  So we’ll see an increase in sales starting Wednesday, sometimes as soon as Monday,” said Westerlund.
