UMD Volleyball Opens Practice

Bulldogs Coming Off Season Without NCAA Trip

Offseason became preseason Monday as prep teams across Minnesota reported for the first day of fall sports practices.

But it’s not just the high school kids.

College camps opened at the University of Minnesota Duluth as well, including in Romano Gym, where Jim Boos led the volleyball team through the first workout of the season.

Boos’ Bulldogs have to replace a quartet of seniors, including 1st Team All-NSIC picks Ashley Hinsch and Mariah Scharf.  But Boos has a couple weeks to work out his rotation, Monday was all about the excitement of getting back to work.

“This time of year is always very exciting,” Boss said.  “There’s a lot of unknowns after graduating some talented kids the previous year, and you’ve got some talented incoming kids that you really don’t know enough about yet.”

The excitement was shared by the players.

“This is what we’ve been waiting for, training for all summer,” said senior Sydnie Mauch.  “First day of practice, getting on the floor, doing our running and conditioning, cheering each other on.  It’s very exciting to be here.”
