Superior Dining Celebrates Grand Opening at UMD

$5.2 million facility serves the dining needs of campus.

When it was first built in 1974, the dining center at UMD served 900 students. Now it serves over 3,000. With that need in mind, construction started on a new facility in March.

The newly remodeled Superior Dining has opened and given students a new place to eat on campus.

Superior Dining is more energy efficient, has more food options and students are saying there’s not a better spot to put on the freshmen fifteen.

UMD sophomore Mike Kenyanya couldn’t be happier to cut the ribbon for the new Superior Dining.

“It’s obviously beautiful but if you ate here last year, you can really see the contrast,” said Kenyanya.

The previous dining center was built in 1974 and was due for the $5.2 million upgrade which Dining Services funded.

“It’s been an exciting day. We’ve waited for this day for a very long time,” said Claudia Engelmeier, director of Dining Services.

Superior Dining features a more open layout than before and new live cooking demonstrations.

“We had a lot of wide eyes and this is great,” said Engelmeier.

There are more energy efficient lighting sources and appliances throughout the space and it also uses reclaimed lumber.

The students helped pick out the seating where so many friendships are formed.

“We see so many students that sit together, the new freshmen coming in, cooking for a friend, just connecting here and making memories,” said Engelmeier.

Students have been amazed by Superior Dining and their food.

“The food is good obviously, you think it’s just the building that’s new but they definitely did change up some things,” said Kenyanya.

A renovated Superior Dining leaves the tails wagging on many of these Bulldogs.

“Not only nourish your physical body but also spiritually and emotionally,” said  Kenyanya.
