Cooper Elementary School Will Have New Facility in 2018

New Facility to be Built for Cooper Elementary School Students

Last April voters said yes to a referendum that will allow the school district of Superior to proceed with plans to replace Cooper Elementary School.

Now, the development is one step closer with the approval of design permits by the city this week.

Community members have expressed mixed emotions about the new school designed to run parallel to North 17th Street between Wyoming and Missouri Avenues. This location is adjacent to the existing school that will be demolished when the new school is complete.

The two story facility includes 50 percent more square footage than the existing school, the expansion is causing privacy concerns for some neighbors but officials say the change is necessary since it has been years since the school has been renovated.

When creating the new campus they utilized a plan called the block process where community members and students were invited to come in and say exactly which changes they wanted to be made.

School staff say they’re excited for the development.

Brett Brodeen, the Cooper Elementary Principal, said “In my office now I have a brick from the original Cooper over 100 years ago. In my next office I’ll have a brick from the other Cooper and our second Cooper while in the new Cooper.”

Construction will start next April and they hope to have it complete by the Fall of 2018.
