Gary-New Duluth Recreation Area Update

Renovations continue at the community center and recreation area

Progress continues to be made at the Gary-New Duluth recreation area. After undergoing renovations since 2012, the first phase of the project is almost complete.

The Gary-New Duluth recreation area was shut down in 2009 due to city budget shortfalls. For the last several years, community members have been working to reopen and renovate the area.

The community center building reopened in 2015. This year, soccer fields, a pavilion and a baseball area have been added to the site.

Starting next summer, the soccer fields will be open for use and work on a dog park, community garden, and sports court will begin.

The recreation area is expected to fill a need in Gary-New Duluth as a place for people to come together.

“The community desperately wanted, needed a place for community gatherings, for recreation, a place for children through seniors,” says Mark Boben, president of the GND Development Alliance.

The community center is open 2:15 until 5:30pm daily for kids’ after school activities.
