New Community Initiative Spreads Awareness for Dementia

Studies show that Alzheimer’s and dementia are the sixth leading cause of death among Americans.

A new community initiative in Duluth is aiming at increasing awareness about people suffering with mental decline in their older years.

Dementia Friendly Duluth is now in the information gathering stage.

They’ll be sending out surveys into the community to better understand how dementia friendly Duluth actually is.

“It’s a survey that takes about a half hour,” said Mimi Stender, the coordinator of Dementia Friendly Duluth. “It’s general information about the awareness of Alzheimer’s and dementia. And then it gets more specific in the second half.”

DFD has already partnered with a number of area health organizations, including Essentia Health and St. Luke’s.
“Our partners represent the experts and the people that are working on a daily basis that experience persons with dementia,” Stender said.

Dementia Friendly Duluth is still looking for volunteers to join their team; you can find out more by visiting their website.
