Bulldogs Headed Back to NCAA Playoffs
UMD Travels to Emporia State for First Round Matchup
After a one year absence, the University of Minnesota Duluth is back in the NCAA Division II Football playoffs.
Sunday, Bulldog coaches and players gathered on campus and learned they are Kansas-bound. UMD, seeded 5th in Super Region 3, takes on 4-seed Emporia State (Kan.) next Saturday in the first Round.
Both teams come in at 10–1, and both have won 10 in a row. UMD extended its streak over the weekend with a 48–34 come from behind win at arch rival St. Cloud State.
The Bulldogs and Hornets met in the playoffs three years ago, with UMD defeating Emporia State at Malosky Stadium. Coach Curt Wiese hoped to host the first round game again this year, but says being back in the national playoffs is the important part.
“It’s become an expectation for UMD Football that we’re here on Sunday afternoon as the regular season ends; as opposed to sitting at home watching everyone else be selected,” said Wiese. “It’s an honor to be back in, be part of the top 28 teams in Division II.”
The winner of Saturday’s game travels to Northwest Missouri State for the second round. The Bearcats earned a first round bye as the region’s top seed.
