Bulldogs to Meet Emporia State in Playoff Rematch

UMD Beat Hornets 55-13 in 2013 1st Round Matchup at Malosky Stadium

The season ended for most Division II football teams last Saturday.  But the University of Minnesota Duluth is one of the lucky 28 teams programs that get to be a part of the national playoffs.

The Bulldogs started preparing for Saturday’s game at Emporia State (Kan) Tuesday.
This game is a rematch of a 2013 1st round playoff contest.  UMD won 55–13 at Malosky Stadium in the playoff debut of captains Drew Bauer, Beau Bofferding, Beau Bates, and Peter Bateman.

Watching film from the first meeting is like a taking trip down memory lane for Bulldog coach Curt Wiese.

“It’s funny looking back on film from 2013 seeing Beau Bates, Drew Bauer, Beau Bofferding and Peter Bateman, those guys, playing against Emporia State,” said Wiese.  “They looked relatively young at that time, I know they’re excited to have another opportunity.

Bauer, who threw for a touchdown and ran for four others in the 2013 meeting, says both the Bulldogs and Hornets have changed since their last meeting.

“Our team and their team is different from three years ago when we played them,” said Bauer.  “You can’t put too much stock in that film, but it’s a rivalry and we have to keep that tradition going.”
