Excitement is building for the 2017 Duluth Polar Bear Plunge that’s just days away.
Nearly 1,000 people will take the plunge into Lake Superior in Canal Park this Saturday starting around 2 p.m.
Money raised helps Minnesota Special Olympics.
The Duluth Police Department is the big backer of the event every year giving opportunities to Special Olympians who can’t compete in everyday competitions.
“The anticipation is the worst — standing on the edge of the dock getting ready to jump in, hearing the screams of the people that came out before the air rushes out of your lungs. [It] feels like prickly needles all over your skin. But after, it’s like 85 degrees and sunny,” said Mike Thamm, an officer with the Duluth Police Department and main organizer of the Duluth Polar Bear Plunge.
FOX 21 will have a team of plungers hitting the water Saturday, including Dan Hanger, Nikki Davidson and Gino Recchia. To make a pledge to your favorite FOX 21 personality, click here.
