Downtown Businesses Prepare for Birkie Crowds

With Over 40,000 visitors in One Weekend, Local Eateries are Prepared for Big Business

HAYWARD, Wisc. – Thousands of skiers, fans, and followers are heading to the Hayward area this weekend, taking part in the annual American Birkebeiner tradition despite this year’s lack of snow.

However, trail conditions aren’t keeping folks from enjoying cold brews, Birkie fever, and friendship.

The owner of the Gridiron Pub and Grub in Downtown Hayward tells FOX 21, his staff is fully prepared and stocked up on food and beverages.

“We’re still going to be busy. We have a big weekend planned, but it definitely affects the community,” said Tim Metropulos, Owner of the Gridiron Pub and Grub.

The popular sports bar has many local beer selections, including the Birkie beer, brewed in Menominee.

The Gridiron will also be offering many food and drink specials throughout the weekend along with live entertainment for guests.

“The patio, the front bar, the back bar is just full of people just talking and having a good time; watching the race,” said Metropulos.

Friday evening, live country-western music will be playing by the local band Larry’s Drifters.

On Saturday night, a Nordic Viking Costume Party will be happening at the Gridiron.
