New Cloquet Middle School Taking Shape
School Officials Give Tour of New Building, Expected to Open By Next School Year
CLOQUET, Minn. – The new Cloquet Middle School is expected to open for students in September. Now that the building is starting to come together, school officials gave us a special look inside.
Cloquet is getting its first new middle school in more than a hundred years.
“We’re moving into a facility that will handle our technology a lot better, also will handle our class flow a lot better,” says Cloquet Middle School Principal Tom Brenner.
The new building adds fifth grade to the middle school program. Currently, it only includes sixth through eighth grade.
“We currently have a two station gym, so this will be an expansion. We’ll go to three stations, which will help since we’re adding a grade,” says Brenner.
Another big change will be the addition of learning pods.
“We have this large building, but within that building are small learning areas where we can really get to know kids, build relationships with them, and then help them on their path,” says Brenner. “Around each pod is ten classrooms. In the center of that is their lockers and there’s an open space learning area.”
Plus, more opportunities for the community to use school facilities.
“It’s very important to us to make sure that we build a building that can be used, not just from 8 o’clock to 3 o’clock but from 8 o’clock to 9 o’clock so the whole community can use this,” says Brenner.
Construction is going smoothly, with more improvements coming every week.
“The end of this week, beginning of next week, we hope to hit a big milestone of getting the last roof on this building,” says Greg Schendel, main project manager for Kraus Anderson Construction. “Weather won’t be a concern anymore after we get our last roof on.”
The building is expected to be completed in August, just in time for the school year.
“It’s going to happen. We’re going to be in here next fall and so I mean, that excitement just builds as we go forward,” says Brenner.
Cloquet starts school just after Labor Day on September 6th.
