Belknap Street Construction Starts Next Week

On Monday, drivers will see workers surveying the area setting up road signs for detours

SUPERIOR, Wisc. – After years of planning, construction is finally set to begin next week on Belknap Street in Superior.

On Monday, drivers will see workers surveying the area setting up road signs for detours. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation tells us the ground is still a little too hard to start digging right now. Work could start as early as April 1. Alternate routes will be in place along Wisconsin 35 and Highway 53.

“We simply want to encourage anyone who isn’t doing business on Belknap to take the alternate route,” said Brendan Dirkes, Project Manager for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. “You won’t have to deal with the construction. There is going to be some congestion but we are going to maintain traffic at all times when possible at least.”

WisDOT says there will only be a few times this portion of Highway 2 will be completely shut down.

Temporary pedestrian walkways will also available during the 2–year project.
