Smoking Forum Held in Duluth

Discussions Focused on Menthol Cigarette Use Among Minors

DULUTH, Minn.-The American Lung Association held it Kick Butts event today, which focused on how young minorities are targeted using menthol tobacco products.

Data was also shared from the Menthol Cigarette Intervention Report from the Minnesota Legislature. One piece of information they found out from the study, is that young people in poorer neighborhoods are targeted through psychological lures like music, and even coupons.

They even target down-trodden businesses to hawk their products.

“They’ve done it a lot of different ways,” Eugene Nichols of the African American Leadership Forum, a keynote speaker at the event. “There are large communities, large organizations, that take money from the tobacco companies and again, money is hard to turn down when your organization is already struggling to make ends meet.”

The event was sponsored by the Duluth Chapter of the NAACP and the Black Student Association at UMD.
