2017 Commercial Shipping Season Kicks Off Today

DULUTH, Minn. – The 2017 commercial shipping season started this morning, just after sunrise.

The  Roger Blough was the first ship to pass beneath the lift bridge and begin her journey the the CN Docks in Two Harbors this season, after having berthed at the Clure Public Marine Terminal for the winter.

“To hear all the engines start to warm up, to start hearing the whistles, especially the salutes down at the Aerial Lift Bridge, it’s a very exciting time,” Adele Yorde with the Duluth Seaway Port Authority told FOX 21. “The harbor is waking up. A lot of people are going back to work. The economy starts to feel the impact of all those commodities moving through this international seaport.”

The American Century is expected to depart for Silver Bay on Thursday.

The American Spirit will also venture away from her winter layup this week, Saturday, and load iron ore pellets at CN Duluth.

With the Soo Locks opening up officially on Saturday, and the limited ice conditions across all of the Great Lakes, the Port of Duluth-Superior could see its first arrival into the harbor on Sunday.
