Tornado Rips Through Western Wisconsin; 1 Dead, 25 Injured

CAMERON, Wis. (KMSP) – One person is dead and 25 others are injured after tornado touchdowns near Cameron, Wis., according to the Barron County Sheriff.

The search for survivors is ongoing. Responders could hear the voices of people trapped inside their homes when they first arrived, packing six people into a single ambulance in one instance to transport victims to the hospital.

Chetek Mayor Jeff Martin said 50 to 60 homes were impacted.

The lone death, identified as 45-year-old Eric Gavin, was reported at the Prairie Lake Estates mobile home park off Highway 53, south of Highway 8. Another touchdown was reported further north, along Highway 8. A public safety source told Fox 9 that all ambulances and firefighters in Barron County were called to the area.

The Red Cross of Wisconsin is setting up a reception center in Ladysmith, Wis., for those affected by the storms.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for Barron County until 10 p.m. Tuesday. A tornado warning was in place until 6 p.m. Thunderstorms with heavy rain and severe weather are possible later Tuesday, with flooding and large hail being the primary threats.
