Explosion Destroys Cabin near Solon Springs, Leaves 1 Man Hospitalized

SOLON SPRINGS, Wis. – A man is hospitalized after an explosion at a cabin on Lake of the Woods, just east of Solon Springs, Wisconsin. The man suffered burns and smoke inhalation, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident was reported just after noon on Friday, May 19 at 10654S Lake of the Woods Loop Road, by a neighbor who reported hearing a loud explosion that shook her house. They also repored flames coming from the cabin next door and a vehicle rapidly leaving the driveway.

First responders arrived on scene to find flames shooting several hundred feet into the air as propane escaped and ignited from a taken that was filled the same day.

Deputies were able to locate the owner, Dale Obrien, 85, of Superior, at a residence across the lake. He was treated by paramedics. Obrien reported tha the was attempting to start his gas fireplace when a burst of flames forcefully shot out of the fireplace toward him. He immediately evacuated, knowing that he had been burned. He was taken to a local hospital and treated for burns to his hand, face, and legs, as well as smoke inhalation.

Authorities report that the cabin is a total loss and several nearby structures were damaged by the heat.
