Tourism Season Kicking Off in Grand Marais

Most Businesses Are Open by Memorial Weekend

GRAND MARAIS, Minn.- Grand Marais was recently named the Best Midwestern Small town by USA TODAY, and locals believe this award is drawing well deserved attention to the city.

The Small Northern town is known for its proximity to the wilderness, bike and hike trails, and access to a wide range of outdoor activities, but that’s not all.

“There’s a little bit of anything for everyone. We’ve got fantastic restaurants, incredible views, we’ve got really comfortable places to stay, we got outdoor adventure, bird watching, rock picking,” lists Jay Arrowsmith DeCoux, the Mayor of the City of Grand Marais.

And that works in great favor for Grand Marais, whose economy is largely supported by tourism.

“When we hit the National list of places you don’t want to miss in a lifetime, being the best small Midwestern town and back a few years, we were voted coolest town, it gets on people’s radar and they don’t want to miss seeing it,” says Linda Jurek, the Executive Director of Visit Cook County.

And though the weather has been a little cold and rainy, that hasn’t stopped tourists from visiting the quaint town in the Northwoods.

11:09:13:08-16 We have seen an uptick in traffic the last 2 weeks that has been pretty incredibly crazy.

Most seasonal businesses in Grand Marais will be open by memorial weekend.
