Fire Burns Railroad Tracks Near Osaugie Trail

Area Affected is Little Used Stretch of BNSF Track

SUPERIOR, Wis. – Fire crews needed about 10 hours to battle an overnight fire by the Osaugie Trail.

The fire started around 1:30 Wednesday morning on a little used stretch of track operated by the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Railroad.

Superior’s Battalion Chief Steve Edwards, says figuring out how the fire started won’t be easy.

“Our fire investigator now will go back in try to determine how it started,” said Edwards.  “Most of the trestle itself has been taken apart, so he probably won’t be able to figure out how it started.”

A BNSF official told FOX 21 the railroad only uses the track to back trains into the nearby grain elevator.  There’s no estimate on when repairs will happen.
