Officials Investigating Drowning on East Bear Lake in Michigan

Incident happened on Sunday, July 2

GOGEBIC COUNTY, Mich. – The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating an apparent drowning that happened Sunday evening at East Bear Lake of the Sylvania Wilderness Area in Watersmeet Township.

Authorities say they were notified of the incident around 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Information from witnesses states that all but one of the campers was out of the water and near a campsite when they discovered they could no longer see the individual in the water.

Local agencies along with the Department of Natural Resources conducted a search until dark. The search resumed Monday morning with additional assistance with the U.S. Forest Service.

The body of 24-year-old Sang-Mook Yoon of Grand Rapids, Michigan, was recovered shortly before 10 a.m.
