Diving Instructor Offers Safety Advice

SCUBA Divers Always Check Weather and Wave Conditions

DULUTH, Minn. – Diving instructors want to remind people to take safety precautions.

They say it’s important to get certified as a SCUBA diver by taking a twenty hour program that includes textbook reading plus pool and open water training.

Experienced divers always check weather and wave conditions before heading out.

“You want to come back alive, definitely you want to come back alive and you want to look at all those factors, whether equipment is operating properly and wave conditions of course and sometimes even water clarity,” said diving instructor Elmer Engman.

“People have a phobia about Lake Superior. They think it’s dark and deep and very, very cold and this summer the lake is warmed up in the lower sixties. It is very clear and exciting place to dive.”

Instructors say if safety is taken into account SCUBA diving is one of the safest sports to try.
