Authorities Rescue Missing Hunter in Sawyer County

SAWYER COUNTY, Wis. – Authorities responded to the call of a missing elderly hunter who had not returned home, just before 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23. according to the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office.

The caller indicated that an 83-year-old male had been hunting on the West Fork of the Chippewa River in the Moose Lake area and had not returned home.

Sawyer County Deputies and Sawyer County Search & Rescue, with the assistance of several other agencies, responded to the area and began a water search.

The male’s vehicle had been located parked and unoccupied from the staging area at the Round Lake Fire Department on Pine Point Road.

Volunteers from Search & Rescue worked to conduct a ground search with the assistance of K-9 units. Shortly into the search, voice contact was made with the male and he was located by the ground team.

The man told authorities he got turned around and became lost as darkness set in. He was taken to an awaiting ambulance and evaluated. He was eventually released.

Responding agencies assisting Sawyer County include the Round Lake Fire Department, Hayward Fire Department, Wisconsin DNR, and Sawyer County Ambulance.
