Northlanders Take on Firefighting Challenge

Kids and Adults Worked Through Challenge Courses with Firefighting Gear

VIRGINIA, Minn. – The Iron Range community could train like firefighters today at the first ever Firefighter Challenge.

The free event had two challenge courses on which kids and adults could test out their skills.

Competitors wore weighted vests and air packs to get an idea of what the Virginia and Mountain Iron firefighters go through at their jobs every day.

“It’s not only a fitness challenge but it gives you a good idea of what these guys have to go through on the job,” said Samantha Hadley, Director of Marketing and Community Engagement at the Mesabi Familiy YMCA. “I think often times we forget how difficult their jobs are so this gives everyone, it’s a nice reminder of how tough their job can be.”

The Mesabi Family YMCA would like to make the challenge an annual event.
