Vietnam Veteran Receives Purple Heart Decades After Being Wounded

SUPERIOR, Wis. – A Vietnam veteran from the South Range has finally received his Purple Heart after being wounded in 1969.

73-year-old Jerry Carswell was in his early 20s when shrapnel from a rocket attack injured him.

Carswell was hospitalized in Vietnam before being shipped to Japan and then the U.S. to recover, which he believes, may have contributed to the oversight of never getting his Purple Heart.

“It’s kind of a special day. I knew I had the medal coming but it took all these years before we finally tracked it down and I appreciate it for being supported by all these guys,” Carswell said.

The Douglas County Veterans Services Office helped track down Carswell’s Purple Heart.

It was presented by Benna Ford owner Pat Ringold.
