UMD Continues Homegrown Captains Trend with Kuhlman

Karson Kuhlman is the fourth UMD captain in a row to be from the Northland.

DULUTH, Minn- For the past four years, UMD’s captains have been home grown right here in the Northland and this season there will be no change to that as Esko native Karson Kuhlman takes over.

“He’s had votes for three years, certainly a very deserving leader for us and the guys have a lot of respect for him,” said Head Coach Scott Sandelin.

“It’s obviously a huge honor… I’ve been fortunate to play with a lot of local guys but also captains the past three years,” said Kuhlman.

Just because these captains are from the same area, doesn’t mean they share the same style.

“I don’t change anything that I do I think I’m in a different spot than guys in the past considering that we have so many freshman and so many new faces around the rink,” said Kuhlman.

After this year, UMD will pick a new captain as Kuhlman graduates.

“I think we’ve had some really really good leaders here in the last five, six years and it’s been awesome that they’ve been from the area,” said Sandelin.
