1 Dead, 2 Injured After Home Being Set on Foundation Falls

BEMIDJI, Minn. – Just before 11 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 15, the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call of three adult males injured and trapped under a small home that was being transferred onto a foundation.

Several agencies responded to the call in the 16000 block of Whipple Lane in Kelliher, near Shotley Township, around 60 miles north of Bemidji.

Authorities report the home was being placed on a foundation when the house fell from the jacks, wood posts, and cement blocks being used to lift and support the structure, when it fell trapping one of the workers beneath it.

Kelliher Fire and Rescue personnel were able to extricate the individual, but lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful. The deceased has been identified as 25-year-old Joshua O’Brien, of Blackduck.

The two injured parties were identified by authorities as Christopher O’Brien, 52, of Blackduck, and Matthew Hjelden, 49, of Cloquet. The extent of their injuries is unknown at this time.

The investigation is pending with the Beltrami County Coroner’s Office.
