Chisholm Roundabout Scheduled to Open Oct. 15

CHISHOLM, Minn. – The roundabout at the intersection of Highway 73 and Highway 5 in Chisholm is set to open on the afternoon of Wednesday, Oct. 18.

The project was part of a re-route of Highway 5, which was needed in order to accommodate an expansion of mining operations at Hibbing Taconite.

The project was phased over two years. Phase one included the realignment of Hwy 5 onto Hwy 136, which was completed in the fall of 2016, and phase two began in August this year, which involved the construction of the roundabout.

The total cost of the project is $3.3 million. Hibbing Taconite paid the full $1.8 million cost of phase one and MnDOT, St. Louis County, and Hibbing Taconite evenly split the $1.5 million cost of phase two.

This is the second roundabout to open in St. Louis County.
