New Shop in Carlton Offers Handcrafted Goods and Gifts
Gateway Goods Offers a Variety of Handmade Goods and Gifts for Everyone to Enjoy
CARLTON, Minn. – As the season of gift giving soon returns, many of us may think of big box stores for the latest and greatest gadgets and goods.
However, one dynamic sister duo in Carlton is looking to shine a spotlight on local businesses.
If you get a chance to take a break along Chestnut Avenue in Carlton, chances are you’ll stroll past a special shop.
“It’s just fun to see new faces and the local people too,” said Sheryl Davis, Co-Owner of Gateway Goods. “We wanted to give artists a place to sell their goods.”
For nearly one year, Davis and her sister have given the gift business a go.
“We started out slow trying to gather different artists,” said Davis.
Now, growing Gateway Goods is becoming a passion for the sisters.
“There are several artists that have never shown their work anywhere and chose us to showcase their items,” said Davis.
The sisters are now getting used to gathering business cards for ideas, then contacting the local crafters to see if there’s any interest.
“Now we’re finding that the artists are finding us,” said Davis.
The owners say their small business reflects a sense of community. From handmade bowls to booties for babies.
“We have pine needle baskets and things that we never dreamt that people were even making,” said Davis.
Cool creations enticing customers from far away yet also close to home.
“We’re starting to burst at the seams and it’s a good feeling rather than looking at the shelves wondering where can we get art,” said Davis.
Much of the shop includes material from locals, however, Davis and her sister do include works of art from out of the area.
“There’s something new every week, things that we never dreamt we’d be having in the shop,” said Davis.
Whether it’s an antler for your next game of cribbage, or a simple smile when you walk in the door, Gateway Goods wants to be your firs stop
before you check out the breathtaking beauty of nearby Jay Cooke State Park.
“If you’re looking for a gift, a handmade unique item from a local artist , there’s something for everyone.”
