Wisconsin Girl Scouts Create Small Food Pantry

DEFOREST, Wis. (AP) – Girl Scouts in southern Wisconsin are stocking the shelves of a small food pantry they created.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports a seven-member Girl Scouts troop largely funded the installation of the Little Free Pantry box outside Christ Lutheran Church in DeForest. The wooden box is a place where community members can pick up free nonperishable food and other necessities.

Troop leader Jenny Casper says one scout will be assigned to the box each month. The scout will be responsible for checking the pantry to see if it needs refilling or if items have expired.

Mary Lyons is a scout and seventh grader at DeForest Area Middle School. She says the troop presented the idea to the church earlier this year.

Casper says she hopes other youth groups and community members will contribute to the project.
