Preparing for Firearm Deer Hunting Season Opener

Hunting shops are busy with Northlanders preparing for deer hunting.

HERMANTOWN, Minn.- Many Northlanders making final preparations before Minnesota firearm deer hunting opener takes place bright and early Saturday morning.

Many hunters have already spotted bucks on their trail cams. With all the excitement, hunters need to remember the essentials.  Many popular items bought from Fisherman’s Corner in preparation for the season are; scope protectors, hand warmers, and water proofing spray. With the wet and cold weather, it’s important to stay dry and move around.

“When you get cold weather like this, it gets the animals moving quite a bit,” owner of Fisherman’s Corner Scott Vanvalkenburg said. “The bucks are definitely in rut, they’re starting to chase so it’s going to be a good season.”

Stopping into the shop also gives hunters an opportunity to swap hunting stories; what tricks have worked and other tales of luck.

“There’s always a different tactic and sometimes it’s very lucky that they had a chance,” Vanvalkenburg said. “Sometimes there’s a lot of time and skill to get that point where you actually see that big devil, you know.”

This time of year is something many in the Northland look forward to.

“To a lot of folks, hunting is more than hunting,” Vanvalkenburg said. “They get family and friends out to the hunting shack. You know it’s a pretty big deal.”

Fisherman’s Corner is hosting a Big Buck Contest all season long, starting tomorrow. Bring your buck in to be weighed and see how it ranks against the rest.
